Putting our old fella down today. . .sad :(

our 29+ year old QH gelding (whom we've owned almost 1 year) has been battleing chronic founder compounded by a bad mechanical founder just before we got him, for quite some time. His coffin bone is entirely torn free and "floating". After abcess after abcess, lots of lost weight, and increasingly bad arthritis in his 3 "good" legs from compensating for the bad one, we've decided it is time to let him rest.
His spirits are still good, his appetite is healthy, and he loves his pets and scratches and grooming- so it's hard to just give up! He's been on lots of Bute and then Banamine, as it seemed to give a bit more relief, for the last few days.
It is a tough choice to let him go, and my kids are SOO sad, but it is the right choice. . . So please send kind thoughts for my old "Macho".
    Thanks!

I've no doubt that it was a hard decision to make, but most definitely the right one. It's hard to let go of a horse and too often we keep them around for our benefits and not think about what's best for them.
Sending many good thoughts and vibes to your and your family during these hard times. But he'll be feeling no pain soon, and that's your best gift you can give him.

My heart aches for you. I know what you are going thru. I had to put my first horse down 2 yrs ago. She was my friend for 28 of her 31 yrs.

Sending kind thoughts for you and your family

Thanks for the good wishes:) He died peacefully this afternoon after lots of loves and belly scratches, and is buried in our pasture. I'm glad he is no longer in pain.

I can't even imagine how hard that must be. We haven't had to be with many older horses toward the end. We took a liking to donating them to riding programs for younger children. I wouldn't be able to handle making decisions like that.

No doubt he's happy now thouugh, running through the big grassy field that is horsie heaven :)

    Lots of hugs!

I'm so sorry for your loss. I know it is a terrible thing to have to do but you did make the right decision for your horse and ended his suffering. It was a very unselfish thing to do. Hugsssssss
