Quarantine is basically keeping a horse (or any animal/person) away from everybody else to ensure that they have no diseases that are communicable and/or to prevent the spread. For instance: If I had a horse that came in from another barn, or I thought was carrying something, I would put him by himself away from everyone else on the farm and before and after I went to go check on him I would wash up thoroughly. The time of the quarantine depends on the rules of the country that you're bringing an animal into, possible disease, and so on. I know to quarantine for rabies it's about 30-60 days.
