Question about transfer of APHA papers

I didn't know where else to post this, so I figured general talk would work.

I'm going to pick up my new gelding next week. He is registered with the APHA, and his current owner has his papers as well as all the other documentation for Coggins, etc. and is going to give me all of them. However, she has only owned him for a few months and so never had the papers put in her name. I would like to get his papers put in my name. How do I go about doing this? She is friends with the woman who owned him prior to her, so I imagine getting in contact with her wouldn't be an issue. I'm just not sure how the whole thing works as I've never owned a registered horse before.

So if someone could explain the whole process, I'd appreciate it. :)

You would need whoever is listed as his owner on his papers to sign him off. If the lady you are buying him from never transferred him into her name, then the APHA has zero record of her ever owning him.

My mare is the same way. According the APHA, I bought her from her breeder in 2005. I bought her in 2010 from her third owner and she is just now being transferred from the people who bred her's name.

Okay, so is there a form or something I need to print off for her to sign or something like that? And it's just as simple as that? Is there a fee?

$15. You also have to be an APHA member, which is $40 a year. I didn't fill out a separate transfer report or anything, just the back of her papers because that's what the original seller had filled out and signed.

Mm .. Not sure if its the same as AQHA but the breeder I bought my AQHA filly he filled out a transfer report, and then I sent that in.

APHA has one too.. so maybe just in case I would get it filled out by the seller?

Upon further inspection, the previous owner had signed the back of his certificate in anticipation of the girl that I bought him from transferring him to her name. She never did, so I just filled it out with my info. It says the seller is supposed to do it, but I figure, who's going to know? Lol

I wouldn't do that. That is defrauding the APHA of their fees. I would have the other owner sign them, and a transfer to you. Its an extra %15 buck or so but it is legal! God bless, Peg

Sorry however I recently learned from the APHA that if you do not have the registration and transfer papers made out by the actual breeder and owner and fill in the entire portion that says "Must be filled out by the owner of the horse at time of transfer only", including the date of actual transfer you are defrauding the APHA. There is an entire section that is to be filled out by them, not just a name. Make sure your paper work is fully in order. I have been trying to share this information so no one gets in trouble for being careless. Good luck and God bless, Peg
