Rant time

I didn't want to spoil my other happy post, so here's my rant.

There is this one horse at my barn who has so much potential. Smart, gorgeous, fantastic breeding, awesome mover. But he is a pushy, dangerous jerk whose mom lets him get away with anything.

Today a friend tried to move him so we could clean his stall, and he was upset by something (his mom's treatment of him encourages spookiness). He tried to run her down! I know some of you may disagree with this, but my BO gave me a leadrope with a chain and told me if he tried it again to, uh, "get after him" (edited for the forum).

As soon as I opened the door he tried to plow through me. I yelled BACK UP!" and swung the leadrope at him HARD. He was so shocked at getting reprimanded he just stared at me with his eyes huge. He stood for haltering, but once I opened the door all the way he tried to run me down again to get out of the stall. I growled, shanked him, put on my "I'm going to kick you #$%@*#$ butt" body language and backed into the corner of his stall. After that he behaved like a gentlemen, lol. Like I said, he's not stupid.

I actually feel bad for the horse. He has great potential with a different owner. Anyone else seen this?

I'd give you all cookies, but Katie ate them all

We have quite a few horses like this out at the barn Diesel is at. I turned in horses on the weekend to keep board costs down and there were a few that would just run you over. It's a huge pain. I've found that if all the people who are leading them in and out can make sure they are in charge, the horse begins to walk quietly. At least where I was, we were getting them from their pens/stalls more often than the rider was so they learned to not run us over despite their not so disciplining owners.

Yeah, he's usually good for going in/out of pasture, but if anything upsets him, he's been taught it's fine to do whatever you want. He had a biting habit for a while, and if he bit you when you walked by the owner would always say "don't hit him, I don't want him scared of people" *snort*
