Registration Paper Transfer

I am buying a horse tomorrow that will have APHA papers.

I have never bought a horse with papers before and don't know the first thing about it.

All I know is that I should get the original.

But, how am I able to get it transferred to my name? Or, do I need to?

From my understanding is that the current owner has them, but, I don't think he ever got them put in his name. He is a horse trader. He gets really nice horses and resales them a bit more trained, and for a lot more money!

I have seen a picture of the papers, they have the previous owners name on them. I have been in contact with this person to ask about the horse, he was very friendly and helpful.

Can I get them transferred over to me with him if he will do it? How do I do that?

And, do you have to be a member of the APHA to actually do any of this?

I doubt very highly that the original owner, whose name is still on the papers is still in anything like that since he no longer has any horses.

Ugh, as you can see, I need help.

Thanks

There should be a signature on the back of the original papers. Whether it is the signature of the 2nd previous owner or the current owner, it doesn't matter too much. There will also be a section for you to fill out as the buyer with your name & address. Fill out the form as completely as possible & mail the papers & your check to APHA. You'll get updated papers back from APHA listing your name as the current owner of the horse. It will cost around $50 to become an APHA member for one year and transfer the papers.

You need the transfer paper worked to be signed by whomever is named as the current owner of record on the registration paper work.

Yes, with APHA it is a seperate transfer form that needs to be signed by whoever is the current/recorded owner (listed as current owner on the horse's registration certificate). APHA does not have anything to sign on the actual registration certificate itself.

You can print off a transfer form here--
http://www.apha.com/forms/PDFFiles/05TransferReport.pdf

Fill out that transfer form and get the recorded owner's signature and info on it. Send the transfer form, the original registration certificate, and the correct fees (transfer fee + membership fee is usually the cheapest way to go) all to the APHA.

The horse's registration certificate will come back to you with your name as current owner on them.

The back side of the registration certificate will have the transfer form, but you can also print off a transfer form. A printed version will give you the most current revision, including the most current membership & transfer fees.

Thank you, thank you.

Believe it or not, I'm still confused over something.

If the current owner did nothing other than take the papers, can I get them transferred into my name, even if they are in the previous owners name?

Do I have to contact the previous owner?

The current owner has shown me the papers online, and his name is not on the bottom, just the previous owners name.

If the previous owner's name is on the papers, that is who should sign the transfer. It may be that the previous owner has already signed in the appropriate spot since the current owner is a dealer. Most of the time horse dealers are smart enough to have the signatures in place, but they never go through with the transfer themselves.

Let's hope so.

I just wanted to be prepared before I get there tomorrow.

I finally got things figured out and even found the form that I would need if the current owner doesn't have the signature in place and the previous owners won't sign for what ever reason. Lot more expensive.

But, since the original owner talked to me on the phone one night for 45 minutes about this horse, I would hope he would sign no problem.

He was even excited about coming to see his former horse and take him for a ride this coming summer.

Once again, thank you for your patience until I got it through my thick skull!

I'll tell you what the outcome is tomorrow!
