If they're anything like our guys, one round bale will last about an hour haha.
Here's what happened...
Zippy unwrapped it
Max got in the middle of the unwrapped round bale and peed in it
Poppy took a nap in it
Zippy and Max both rolled in it
Zippy pawed it to death and thought it would be fun to disperse it around the 10acre field

Yeah we stick to square bales now. $75 bucks down the tubes haha well not really they had fun with it ~shrugs~

Made me think of this:

Tianimalz likes this.

Everyone should be allowed at least one bad habit, and that's NOT owning a horse!

We also use square bales(small ones) but it's because we have no means of moving round bales. We just moved our horses to a property we are moving to and we will be taking care of them instead of boarding them.

When we boarded them, they got round bales and it did seem like they pulled a lot out of the feeder which was wasted. They also wouldn't eat all of it out of the feeder. They still pull some out but it's minimal. Now they eat it all down to the ground if we don't put enough in. For small square bales, we've found out that they will eat about 1/2 a bale per horse per day in the summer and are guessing that they will eat a full bale per horse per day in the winter. Another plus that we've found with square bales is that there has been less mold. The square bales are usually kept indoors where round bales are stored out in the elements.

If you want to minimize waste with round bales, put the bale on a couple pallets to keep it off the ground, use a (horse) hay ring, and rake up any hay thrown out and toss it back in the ring everyday (for those horses that love to toss their hay around). Even in wet, muddy weather, we have very little waste and with 4 mares, round bales are almost a 50% cost savings over squares.

On the seventh day, he Painted the good ones.
