Safe shade trees for horses in West Texas

I recently lost my 3 year old colt to Laminitis. I was able to bury him at our barn. I really want to plant a tree where he is burried. Does anyone know what kind of trees would be hardy in West Texas and that aren't poisonous to horses? Thanks!
