Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show

I have a friend I used to work for exercising her horses and cleaning stalls for her who has offered me an AMAZING opportunity. She has a friend who runs an Arab show barn in Scottsdale, AZ (two hours south of where I live) who needs a groom for the upcoming show at West World. My friend asked me if I'd be able to do it. The problem is, it's a three week gig and he needed someone basically yesterday. The pay would be AMAZING, though, and the experience would be like none other.

In order to do this, I'd either have to take a leave of absense from work or quit my job. I don't know how long it would take to process a leave of absence or even if they'd approve it (I would have to give a reason other than going to work a horse show, obviously). I would just quit if I knew I could find another (better) job upon returning, but I live in a relatively small town and jobs are scarce. I can't just quit and hope for the best because my boyfriend (who I live with) doesn't have a paying job (long story).

What would you do if you were in my shoes?

If you think you can make enough to hold you over until you get another job once you come back... Or if you don't really like your job, I'd do it!
BUT... If you don't think you'll get employed once the show is over and you have a good gig where you're at right now, I'd have to pass.
I would LOVE to make it down to Scottsdale one year to see that show. I'd have to be pretty confident of my finances to quit my job though. As a groom though I suspect you'll be run off your feet and won't get to enjoy watching the classes sos much though. LOL

My friend said that at a regional show, she made $600 just in tips. She said that the regional shows are tiny potatoes compared to Scottsdale for tips.

I also need to say that, while I don't *hate* my job, it is definitely a dead end job. I need something that pays better and where I have potential to grow, personally and professionally. The company I work for has two types of employees: those who have been with the company for years in the same position and are happy there, or those who work there for a few months or a year and then realize they're not going to get anywhere working there and leave.

Well, I guess it's up to you if you want to take the risk!

I have been there as a spectator. I knew a few trainers at the time. You look around and you can smell money.

Jobs are too hard to come by to just quit unless you have money saved up. You may end up with no money and have to give up your horse and other things that you love. There will be other horse shows. You need to think about financial security.

I myself are going to the arab show. I plan to watch. (and shop) Its about a 2 hour drive for me. You should be able to get a short time leave Or vacation days off. Just talk to your boss. I plan to show at the show I hope next year. My arab still needs a little more work.

As much as it sucks, I'd have to pass on the show. I've found out through the years that folks who say they make "X" amount doing such n such (especially if it isn't college degree or high tech work) is usually ... embellished. I'm not saying this is so for this particular scenario. Just something to keep in mind.

And if jobs are that hard to come by in your area, to leave one even if it's a dead end BEFORE you have another can be disastrous. I know where I'm at I wouldn't even consider it because it took me MONTHS to get a job here in the first place.

Just IMO of course :)

The Scottsadle show is amazing. I go every year and love to shop at Scheniders there! I say if you want to work with horses as a career definitely go. It's a great opportunity! Otherwise, it might be smart to stick with knowing that you have a job for the security.
