Talking Secretariat's grandson!

I got my horse about 4 years ago. I didn't know much about his past other than the abuse he had gone through and that he was an off the track thoroughbred. A friend of mine did some research on my horse's registered name and found that he is a direct grandson of Secretariat and that Bold Ruler (secretariat's sire) is also my horse's great grandsire. I'm just amazed that my horse has some of the best bloodlines a thoroughbred can have and I didn't know it when he was given to me free four years ago... He's by all means an amazing horse also. He's raced 40 times, had 4 wins, 5 second places, and 2 thirds (not a great career but still kinda a lot of races). He's great with kids, loves to go fast... I couldn't as for a better horse even if he had bad bloodlines or was grade. But now that I know he's a fancy bred race horse I can't help feel a little pride for him. Oh on a side note, his breeder was former Seahawks player Mike Tice...

It's always cool to discover those sorts of things! The TB that I worked a little with over the summer had Seattle Slew as a great grandfather, and Secretariat as a great-great grandfather (being AP Indy was his grandsire). It's sad to think of how many descendants of those great horses have ended up basically being throwaway horses when their racing days are up like this guy was :(

One of the coolest things was when I looked up my QH's bloodlines, and tracing them back until I found the Godolphin Arabian and the like. Exactly what you'd expect from a QH, but still really cool to actually click back until you see it!

How very cool!

Interesting what you might find in a pedigree...

I am not a race fan but I did watch all three of the Triple Crown races the year Secretariat won. I thought he was drop-dead gorgeous and a spectacular individual.

I have a rescued OTTB also, have a copy of her papers. She is a granddaughter of Seattle Slew! I don't know TB pedigree much at all, But I know Seattle Slew. And Secretariat!

We have a granddaughter of Secretariat! She isn't particularly fast though and was badly injured as a 4 year old so she's not cleared for strenuous jumping or anything any more. Do you know your boy's race record?

Baby Huey goes back to Man 'O War. That was interesting to find out. Didn't know if I should buy him a red velvet blanket and a gold water trough or not, but I managed to resist.

Comes from dam's side, who traces back to Top Deck, who goes back to Man 'O War, making Seabiscuit a kissing cousin somewhere in there....

Top Deck goes back to Equipoise, to Hampton to Birdcatcher to Eclipse to Darley Arabian on the top, and Godophin Arabian on the bottom

Can trace some of his ancestors back to mid 1600's....and found some Arabians in there too.

He's also got some great QH bloodlines too, which I found interesting. Skipper W, Sonny Dee Bar, McCues on there....Poco....just a nicely bred horse.

Love the little fat boy.

Well shoot....ran Bonanza's linage back and he too goes back to Eclipse...and both he and Baby Huey have "Old Country Wench" as one goes to that name and another to her sister???

And he is top and bottom Godolphin Arabian too. As well as Darley Arabian on top.

AHA!! And he has Byerly Turk on his papers too!!! Topside.

Pretty cool....knew I like both of these horses.

Apparently my friend did some more digging and found out that Seattle Slew was an uncle of my boy. That's pretty cool. Mini Merit out of Meritable was his dam too and I know I've heard that name somewhere before...
I do know my horses race records. He's raced in various places around Oregon and Washington. Portland meadows, Emerald downs... and somewhere in grants pass apparently as well as in my home town of Tillamook. He's had 40 starts, 4 firsts, 5 seconds, and 3 thirds...
