You gave this horse another chance; don't blame yourself. It's hard not to want to help those horses knowing their fate. Just be glad that this horse was loved and given a good home before having to be put down.

You did a good thing. I've bought a number of horses at low end auctions over the years & the good outcomes outweighed the bad. I bought an older bay gelding out from under the kill buyer once (years ago when Tx had two slaughter plants) for $160. Skinny, but solid conformation. Got him home and my then 15 yo daughter, who had been terrified to ride since a relatively minor spill at 8, fell in love with him. They logged hundreds of hours over the next several years until she stepped up to a younger, more advanced horse. We found Nevada a retirement home with a friend where he lived out his life giving pony rides to a little boy and grazing on good coastal pasture. He was probably at least 30 when he finally passed. I think about him when I get discouraged about rescue.

Thanks for the support everyone, these kinds of things make our furry friends seem so fragile. You can bet I'm hugging my other horse a little tighter, a little longer since then. And Bellasmom that is a such a perfect story, I love hearing things like that:)

That is such a sad story and a good caution too because for all the many that do have happy endings there are as many that don't and dealing with what you've just gone through is really tough
I would also suggest that you go through a good rescue centre next time as they will have had time to assess the horse before they put it up for adoption - can save a lot of money and heartbreak
Well done for giving this one some love at the end of his life.
