Everyone please enlighten me. What is a show name and why do you not use the registered name or the name used at the barn?
Sorry for my ignorance.
I have stalked these threads to discover the answer but you ladies are not cooperating. Shalom
Show name would be the name you use for Showing. A lot of horses aren't registered and therefore don't have a registered name. When you go to local shows a lot of people don't want to just put "Buck" or "Lucky" they want to have a name that fits like the others have.
However in MY case, I show under a different name than Cinny's registered name, now. I ride dressage and when I took him to his first schooling show I did use his registered name "Smokies Cinch Bet." Well the first thing people assume after asking my horses name is "oh, so you ride western dressage then." Um NO. And then the snooty warm blood people would say "oh, is he a half Friesian? What breed is he?" When I told them he was a Paint they would look down their noses and say "but he doesn't have spots." or sometimes some other snobby retort before walking away. I didn't make many friends at that show.
My next show I used a different name, and this name is registered with Nebraska Dressage Association so it it sort of a registered name now, just not his APHA name. When he enters the show ring he is announced as "Cinematic Debut." People don't even ASK what breed he is any more, they don't assume I'm showing Western Dressage, and people respond to us in a more positive way at shows. It's kind of odd that with a different name nobody cares what breed he is now.
I know it seems like it's "only a name" but for some, it's about first impressions. And if you aren't showing in breed or "USEF" shows, just sticking to the schooling rings, what does it matter? And because my horse doesn't have any "points" yet on his APHA record, I do have the option to change his registered name, it is being considered.
