It's finally happened -- we've found our girl and she is coming home this Saturday. Can I get a w00t?
She is a nine yo Spanish arab, very sweet, calm and willing, and a beautiful little thing...and everything I could have ever hoped for. :) She'll get her own "show off" thread a bit later. For now however, I need to make sure I do things right, to minimise the stress on her. Do you all have any tips you may give me for when first bringing a horse to a new environment? She has a big space to herself, but one fence is shared with four other horses. I assume if any conflict is to be had, they'll work it out safely without striking themselves on the metal or anything like that...they are all (including herself) very laidback, so I don't foresee that happening, but I assume it would be a good idea to keep a close eye on them for a while.
I was thinking of waiting around 2 weeks to begin riding her? Does that sound appropriate? I know it depends on the horse and all...but personally I don't think she'll be too attentive at first, due to the new surroundings and all. We will walk her in hand and groom her, lunge her, but no riding at first...is this cool?
Anything else? We will have to make a slight change in her diet, but that of course will be done super gradually.
God I feel like an expectant mother
