So much fun, but boy do I suck lol

Today was such a blast. I met up with my cousin-in-law and went riding at her barn. She rode her late 3 yr old and I rode on a 12 year old qh used for dabbling in eventing. it was such a blast riding around and just trying stuff. We put up some poles and t/c them which was interesting since Gunner (the horse I rode) has a terrible canter that he runs into first (never really finished, his owners never come ride him). I have come to realize that I suck so bad at my riding!!!! Well, i've only ever ridden maybe a total of 30 times lol. I am going to do my darndest to take lessons consistently before I start on Thunder, I so don't want to screw him up. Thankfully I have a couple outlets for lessons that look positive. I am very stubborn and refuse to fall off (i know it's inevitable sometimes). my heels wont' stay down and my legs flop out of the stirrups when I canter (well, when it's not a collected canter). and I can't hold a post. Hey but I'm pretty sure I have a darned good seat (at least all the trainers I have been with have said so) so that's something right??? lol. And then poor gunner at the end of the day, I felt so bad, turns out he throws his back sometimes and today he was so sore. His owners can't afford accupuncture or chiro apointments so he has to deal with it. Needless to say I wont' EVER be riding him that hard again. He just had that thing about him like he wanted to run patterns and stuff.....poor guy, he's only 12. In the end though, it was a fabulous day and I learned a lot! I'm calling around on monday about lessons

Good for you, and its great you want lessons and want to learn and do things right.
Im an old beginner and I learn everytime I ride. Its so rewarding and Im sure you will do fine w/ Thunder with a positive attitude and willingness to learn and do him (and you)right.
And have fun!

One of the most helpful things I heard from a riding clinic was something Xenophon, the calvary officer for Alexander the Great explained, and that was the time before stirrups were invented. He said you didn't wanna sit on the horse as you would a chair or stool, but rather like you were standing up and the horse came up underneath you, your center of balence should reflex that idea.

Good luck! And I am sure you don't suck, I am sure that horse cudda been a challenge to any rider (but tthat is why learning to ride him too will make you a better rider). I am lucky, my horses have great gaits (except the stud, don't know about him yet.)

Know thyself, know thy horse.
