This weekend was my very first western show, besides gymkhana. I've been wanting to do this for a long time and I'm so happy my boss gave me the opportunity. I shared Skippy with her daughter who I've been teaching. Needless to say there were lots of proud mama moments!!
A little about Skippy... She came to my barn 7 years ago and she was a hot mess from a dead beginner adult rider blasting her around on trails for 7 years. Didn't want to trot, couldn't canter straight, ran straight through your hands, constantly swapped leads, etc. I spent 2 years being the primary one to ride her and now she is a good lesson horse for intermediate students. As a result she has become known as "my horse", still to this day there aren't many people who can "speak her language". She is a ex-Reiner who still knows all her stuff and he daddy was QT Poco Streke. I love he to little piece! Anyhow, on with the post...
It rained on us all... Day.... Long! I didn't mind as I REALLY was looking forward to the day. We showed in showmanship, horsemanship, pleasure, trail and command. My class was combine so it was novice/amature. I was surprised at how many people "show every weekend" showed up with their fancy horses and expensive tack. I placed third (out of 4) in 4 classes and I got a second in pleasure, I believe. I also took home reserve champion of my two or three person division . My student really killed the (again combined) youth/adult beginner w/t and individual canter. She took home grand of at least 4 other riders.
I definitely need to work more on keeping our jog steady, at home it's pretty solid but she was pretty forward at the show. I could have also placed higher in command if I had reversed to the inside instead of rolled back. Skippy OWNS at stuff loping right off, stopping, lead swaps, etc. I could of also placed higher in trail had I spent a little more time memorizing there I should of jogged I was so worried making sure my ADHD nervous wreck student knew what she was doing!!
All and all it as a super fun experience and my proud of my horse and my student! I can't wait for the July one! Here's some pictures.
Good morning Skippy!
We had breakfast together.
Game face!
She wan't a fan of Bri's pep talk.
