Hey all!
I'm turning 18 in a few days and going to get my first tattoo, and of course I want to get a horsey one. I've had the idea for mine for about a year now, so please don't tell me that I'm going to regret it (and if I do, I'm well aware that it's no one's fault but my own). Anyway, I just wanted to get a thread going about horse tattoos since I couldn't really find one on here.

If you have a horse tattoo please post a picture, I'd love to see them all!

I have plenty of tattoos (my entire right side, back, chest, tops of my feet, etc), but none with horses in it. I think if you get the right piece and it is done correctly by a quality artist you will love it! The main thing to keep in mind is that: 1. You get what you pay for!! ALWAYS view a portfolio first and pay close attention to the quality of work. 2. You may one day have kids and become a grandparent etc, having a tattoo on your arm or other visible area (even if not visible, don't underestimate the peeking power of kids) that says "F--- the world" or some other equally stupid statement or image is a bad idea. What you like now at 18 may change as you get older, make sure what you get is something that isn't a phase or "good idea at the time."

Those are the 2 main things I always mention when someone is getting their first tattoo.

Anyways, what part of your body are you planning to get your piece done on? What's the idea you have in mind, if you want to share!

Oh I definitely agree with you! I've been fascinated with tattoos (I love all forms of art) since I was 13, and I can't believe all of the stupid things I wanted to get tattooed on me when I was old enough..I've been looking around at different shops in my area for a while, getting quotes, looking at their work and such.

I always had a rule for myself that if I came up with a tattoo idea and I still liked it after a year, I would probably still enjoy it when I'm able to get it done. I totally agree with the "stupid statement" haha! I figure if I'm too embarrassed to show my grandmother, it probably isn't appropriate ;)

I've had a few passions other than horses throughout the years and like many kids have struggled with trying to figure out what I want to achieve out of life. No matter what I was interested in at the moment, my heart always came back to horses, so I'm fairly confident that it will be a tattoo I can appreciate for a very long time!

I've wanted a horse tattoo for a long time, but not one that was necessarily so obvious (I've seen some beautiful horse tattoos, others I think can look a little tacky). I've been completely stuck on the idea of a bit tattoo since I was about 16. I really like the fact that a horse person will know exactly what it is, but a non horsey person may not know and ask about it. I also think I want to get a small E that looks like it's etched into the bit for my horse, his name is Elton:) I think the best place to put it is on my left inner ankle for two reasons. One, because that is a place on my body that I can easily hide, or choose to let it be seen. Two, because I have self harm scars that I would like to cover up. Riding horses, especially owning my own, helped me so much when I was struggling with my depression and I really don't think I would still be here today if I hadn't found my passion for it. Honestly, my horse saved me.

Thanks for your feedback, and I would LOVE to see pictures of your tattoos!

Lol, Joe is old school, he still thinks chicks with ink are "Trollops". Anyhoo, this trollop has 4 tattoos, one relating to horses is solid black Asian lettering meaning "horse", it's on the inside of my forearm just below my wrist.

Haha ahhhh I see. Nothing irritates me more than people who can't respect what people do with their bodies!

though I don't agree with how Joe made his opinion known, I don't see why I should respect what you do to your body. Personally, I don't think much of young folks tattooing. Not that they are trollops (cute word). I simply see a lot of folks who do so much tattoing that I can no longer see THEM for the requirement that I see their tattoos. Of course, it's your choice, but I cannot say I respect it. I mean, I wouldn't have said anything, but I just thought it strange that you feel others should respect what you do with your body. Accept, yes, respect, h m m ... maybe not so.

I always love the negative comments people have to make concerning tattoos. If you don't like them, fine, you don't have to, but just because it is outside of the scope of what you find appealing how does that make it trashy?? Get off your "high horse," (hehehe) Joe, and accept that what makes this world such an interesting place is that we are all different and show it in different ways...but at the end of the day we all bleed the same red.

I have three! I love them and are expressions of me. In all honesty there will be people everyday (JOE) lol, that look down on you for them and say "Wow! How can you do that to yourself?!" I've learned to deal with it. You either accept me, tattoos and all or you leave me be. I had a friends mom talk to me perfectly fine, then I took my jacket off and she hasn't talked to me since...It just comes with having tattoos. I've never been turned down for a job or anything because of them. Some have asked to have them covered but have become more lax as time went on.

I have a phoenix and peony on my chest/shoulder/back. Also, a realism bird on the left side of my chest under my collar bone, says "What's done is done." Then I have the outline of a horse on my wrist.

I say go for it, make it meaningful, you'll love them and will be addicted. Like others have said though go to a GOOD artist. I've had to have my wrist one touched up three times, because it's always rubbing on everything and fades. My artist though does free touchups for life and he always laughs when he sees me now, asking if a horse tried to lick it off. The more $$$ they cost, the better they usually look and the longer they last when they use better ink. :)

Just make sure you find yourself an experienced tattoo artist, and like stated before look at their portfolio!

My first one is on my right shoulder, says "Cowgirl Up" with barb wire. I still enjoy it, and am going to get another having to do with my classic car. BUT...I have not gotten it because I cannot afford it. So, do not get something on a whim.

Good luck!!

I want to get a a couple horse tattoos as-well. One will be a bust Gypsy she's the one I'm standing next to in my avatar I jokingly call her my equine girlfriend cause were so attached and bonded so well to each other. As for the other one is a bust of Zenyatta the famous race mare on my left bicep area. I have a huge horsey crush on her. Gypsy will be on my right shoulder blade. I've been researching tattoo artists to find one that good with tattooing horses.

While slightly off topic, which the thread went that way (seems they do with opinions), I have absolutely no problem with tattoos. My wife's got a bunch. I have none. She's got another in mind.

What I will say is, scars can have the same or even possibly a worse effect on the general public. I have some pretty wicked scars ( I'm talkin the ones that make tatted up bikers say holy crap), I call em my really expensive stories. But I see how they are looked upon, here the comments, still don't give a ponys terd. Heck I couldn't get em changed if I had a million dollars handy.

Guess what my point is, you're you. Tatts, scars, whatever. I really would discourage a spiderweb on your face, but, if you're buying, an adult, and of sound mind, get after it.

I wish I could find the video I saw on tumblr the other day... a nice little debate between for / against tattoos. The main argument against tattoos is that she thought they were offensive, graffiti on the body, and was sure that 100% of employers would think the same way.
Well, things are changing. My aunt is a nurse and has a couple tattoos that are visible depending what uniform she's wearing, I know another nurse who has them, I've seen lots of people in different offices with tattoos. I'm not saying they DON'T get in the way of your career choices, because they definitely can, but not nearly as much as they used to.

If I was ever going to get one it would be something tiny and sentimental because I'm scared of needles, but I don't think anybody should be actively discouraged from doing what they want to THEIR bodies. Do I think there should be age restrictions? Yes definitely. At sixteen my best friend got an 'awesome' tattoo that I feel she'll regret later in life  but it wasn't my place to stop her.

While I don't have any horse ones, I have 12. I'm a hair stylist so there are really no limitations for me in my industry. Definitely place it where there will be no problems in your field, though. Most of mine are on my left arm, so that makes it quite hard to cover up! I plan to have a half sleeve completely done by the end of next month. People like to make money. Just be careful of who you get to do it, some people know they aren't skilled in portraits but choose to do them anyway.

My mother owns a salon which is where I work at right now, so I don't really have to worry about losing my job anytime soon. Heck, she has 3 tattoos and purple hair!

I'm hoping to do something with horses as my future career (a girl can dream, right?) and I have an internship at a stable in Florida called Valhalla Farms that I'm hoping will push me in the right direction. Afterwards, I'm going to MSU to double major in Business and Equine science, and maybe do something along the lines along training or nutrition. I'm young, and I know that may be likely to change, but I think I kind of figured out I just want to spend the rest of my life around horses. I think having my own business will allow me to do whatever I want with myself, and that's the goal I'm going to strive for. I could never be happy covering up my tattoos and taking out my piercings and I've spent enough years of my childhood being unhappy.

To those who choose to be judgmental, I will tell you a little story. My son, who has both legs and 2 full sleeves, (that have won awards, BTW) was approached by a lady at a gas station. She looked at him and said "How could you DO that? Don;t you know your body is a temple?"

He looked her straight in the face and replied "And have you ever seen s temple that wasn't decorated?"

I cracked up. Lady shut up. It is a personal choice that affects noone else. I have only one, but out of my kids, all 3 have ink, the twins (a the one above and his sister) are the most inked of the group. Both my DIL's have a lot of it also. My only hang up is the $$ they spend on it, even with the "family discount" they get, since they go to the shows with their artist. Not many families have a family tattoo artist. lol

I didn't find his post as insulting her individually as it was just a troll type of post. I have a tattoo as well and stated it was not a horse tattoo. She understood my point I was making in my earlier post and that is what I'm thankful of.

At the time of getting this tattoo I was not a christian who followed the word. i have since been saved in the last few years and have no intentions of getting another because of MY beliefs. I do not judge anyone for what they do as it is not my purpose to do so. I try to love everyone as I have been taught is what is the right and healthy way to live.

With that being said, here is my tattoo and honestly is the first time I have taken a pic to see what condition it is in in over 6 years. I forget its there because I don't need it to remind me of anything anymore.

Tattoo Arm Anchor Shoulder Joint

It reads Mine 11 across the banner. This is the meaning behind my tattoo at the time of getting it.

Mine: She was, is and will be mine to my last breathe. She is all that makes me get out of bed every morning to go work for a living to provide for anything she needs. She is the reason I go straight home from work everyday instead of stopping off to have a drink with the guys.

11: I always got her 11 roses for her birthday.

Rose: She is the 12th rose to complete the dozen.

Anchor: No matter how rough the seas of life got around us she could always keep me where I needed to be in my mind. There is no chain because she is attached at my heart.

My left arm is where it is located because I'm left handed and I could not succeed in life without the use of my left arm. Same thing with her.

I apologize for adding to the digressing of this thread, but wanted to explain myself a little more to those who might have thought I was one who was doing any insulting.

Wow, that's such a beautiful meaning behind your tattoo! I know you weren't trying to be rude in any way, I wasn't insulted at all.

Like you said, I'm completely okay with people choosing not to get tattoos for personal reasons and that doesn't give them the right to police other people's bodies. As long as you treat me with respect I will do the same!
