For those of you that have ever wander if a riding instructor was worth the money....

I have wondered that myself. Last week I hired one. Tonight was my first lesson. My lesson was an hour long. There is already a huge difference in my riding!!! I was pleasantly surprised. I figured she could make a difference over time, but I can't believe she made such a difference already. She really helped put some security in my seat by helping with my stirrup length, my posture in the saddle and even where my legs should be. Even when my horse spooked (there was a guy on a tractor working right beside the arena), I didn't even get loose in the saddle. She really helped me to get my horse to move off my leg a lot better also. She also gave me a weeks worth of goals to work with on my own time. While I was waiting on her, I wonder if she where going to be worth the money, now I think I should have paid her more

Oh gosh I love instructors!! I pretty much would die without my instructor, I just love her, she's like family! That's great that you found an instructor that is really good for you!!!

Thanks for your support Ridergirl! I've always felt that I was riding pretty good, but then again, I can't see myself. The changes she has made with me already has helped my confidence skyrocket! Especially when Major made one of those huge spooks sideways and I didn't even loosen up in the saddle! I'm pretty good at hanging on, but there was no need since my feet and posture where better.

That's really great! I hope I'll be able to find an instructor like that one of these days! Good instructors are truly worth their weight in gold and maybe a little bit more.

Thanks Wallaby I believe you are right about good trainers being worth their weight in gold. With the cost of owning a horse.....board, hay, feed, farrier, vetting...I just consider a riding instructor more of an unnecessary fee, but in hindsight, it is a necessary as anything else if you need help with your riding.

Yes, I agree with all of you, I have a riding instructor, and I truly believe I would never of been able to make this amount of progress, in twice the time, if I just had my friends teaching me. I know, I also have gained a huge amount of confidence since lessons. :) So, trust me, I know how you feel. I am an english rider, and so everything is about position, (well other things obviously too, but position is a very big part of it, without position you wouldn't place too well in a show) So, if I were to ever show without my trainer's advice, and pointers, I don't think I would be able to place in any shows in the future. :)

So, sorry for this MONSTER of a reply, but I just wanted to tell you my experience XD

Ps. Great job with not falling off with that big of a spook !

Yeah, I never realized how a slight adjustment in position could make such a difference. I have learned a lot by just getting out there and riding, also by reading and looking at the horse and riding critique in this forum and learning by the advice given to others, but now I'm to the point that I think in order to get better I need some instruction. The woman who is teaching me used to show walking horses, so she knows how they should be rode.
I'm glad y'all are having the same experience with your riding instructor as me! Thanks everyone for your posts

Sandy i'm totally with you. I went through a total of I believe 6-7 instructors before I found the one I'm with now{been with for 2 years}. She's done miracles for me and I'm ready to compete. And those 6-7 instructors were in 6-7 years. Yikes!

Wow, Beau Baby, sounds like it's been a long struggle for you to find a good trainer. I'm glad you finally found one though!

Me too. She's been like a miracle instructor for me. Fixed my posting habits, my hands, steadied my leg and is now getting me ready for show season.
