Question Tight Equileather half chaps! Advice!?

I got some equileather half chaps for Christmas to go with my fancy new Ariat paddock boots. There is an elastic strip to provide stretch, but it's so tight that it doesn't really stretch well. I would just return them and get a bigger size, but being 5'0", a bigger size would make them so tall that they are over my knees... I have pretty big calves for someone my size. They fit, but they are extremely tight and the zipper doesn't zip all the way down.

Does anyone know anything about equileather? Does it stretch like real leather when wet? Is there anything I can do to make these work?

It will stretch some, but not enough for you to zip them up & be comfortable, sorry.

So if these aren't salvageable, can anyone point me to some chaps that will work...

My calf measures 14" around, and I need a height of 11" It's seeming like chaps this size don't exist...

I had the same problem with a pair of equileather gaiters a couple years ago, and tried the next size up, but it made them too tall to properly bend my knees to ride. I managed to find a friend with skinny calves who loved me forever when I gave them to her. But after that I wouldn't touch equileather with a ten foot barge pole... I ended up getting a real leather pair with elastic inserts (some brandless make I picked up secondhand from an older lady on our yard who had just bought herself some fancy new gaiters).

I must say the best half chaps I have found where from a roadside discount tack warehouse in a little hick town we travelled through. Sorry, can't help you out with brands, these were no names under $20.

There's an Amish community about 40 minutes from my town and there is a man there who does leather work. He cut my stirrup leathers, poked new holes, and re-stitched it for me, and when I went to pick them up, he charged me a whopping $5.

I think I'll take my half chaps to him and ask him to cut away the equileather, and to remake them with real leather, only to fit me properly. I'm assuming it wouldn't cost near as much as buying some leather ones from a store, and they would be custom made for me.
