Tracing a brand

Hi everyone,
I recently purchased an older Quarter Horse to retire him from a hack line. He has a brand on his left hip: a capital L over a bar with a 7 underneath. I'm wondering if there is any way to trace brands? I would like to trace his heritage and let his prior owners know he has found a good final home. I know this may be a hopeless search, but if anyone has any ideas or recognizes this brand please let me know.

Do you know what state, he came form orginally, the state ag department has a record of all brands as does the AQHA, if they had approved the brand. If they didn't you can use both to match the branmd with the former owner.

A good cowboy always has a better horse at the end of the ride, a poor cowboy will be afoot reguardless of the horse.

No I have no idea where he originally came from, and he didn't come with any papers so I don't know if he was ever registered. Kind of a needle in a haystack deal I guess. Thanks for the suggestions.
