any tips, first long trip with him, I did hook a small bucket in his stall to offer water for him, and plan on a stop at a rest area to rest, for both of us. So this is our first big trip, any other tips. I am not taking him out of the trailer, just stopping to rest, and thank you:lol:
On a longer trip I like to hang a hay bag. Offering water is good but don't be alarmed if your horse refuses to drink, mine never will in the trailer. Stopping for 15 or 20 minutes every couple of hours gives you a chance to stretch your legs and him a chance to rest his from having to balance. Really, 6 hours isn't a bad haul.
thank you for the tip, especially about the water part, been thinking all week , how am I going to give him water, I dont have the drop down windows, and do not want to get in the trailer with him, excited to be riding up north with my sister
I take my mare out of the trailer every couple hours but she is also a very easy loader and has been on many long trips.
Six hours isn't bad at all - I wouldn't worry about it too much. If it is hot I would let him out and try to give him water, gatorade works good in a bucket filled with water for those horses who are not fans of water in the trailer.
Forget the water unless it is exceedingly hot.fill a hay net and soak in a tub of water for at least 30 minutes, let it drain and hang it high for him to pick at. This will get moisture into him in a far more effective way.
Personally, I do not unload for a trip this length. 6 hours is not all that long. I do stop and offer water (from home) about the half way mark, but have never had mine drink any. Foxhunter-soaking the hay is a great idea! Also keeps the dust down a bit in the trailer!
