Im not looking for the store baught kind. I want to make my own. I know horses like apples, carrots.Mine will eat almost any thing crakers, grapes you name it.
So what kind of fruits, nuts, crakers, anything does your horse like?
Once a week, or so, I bake horse cookies for the beasties at the barn. If you'd like the recipe, I'd be more than happy to share.
They absolutely love them.
Ok share, I'll write it down
Mine all seem to love cracked corn. I get it for my chickens, and occasionally give them all a handful. They fall all over each other to get some.
Its the only thing they all like equally. Vida has a sweet tooth for peppermint candy but none of the others will eat it.
Ok, here ya go! It is very simple. I usually double the recipe and keep them in ziplock bags. Just beware. They will go moldy if not used within a week or two.
1 cup uncooked oats
1 cup flour
1 cup shredded carrots
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
2 teaspoons vegetable oil
1/4 cup molasses
Sometimes I add a few shredded apples to them as well. And I have left out the sugar or the salt and I doubt the horse noticed the difference.
Mix it all up, and then make small balls and place them on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper.
Bake at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.
When I am not as willing to chop I use this recipe instead.
1 1/2 cups unsweetened apple sauce
1 cup oat bran cereal or ground oatmeal
1/2 cup all purpose flour
I mix it all up and put it into a 9x9 baking pan. Bake for like 20-30 minutes at 350f. Let it firm up, and then cut them into bars.
