Trust/Confidence Issues?

I just got a 23 year old gelding, Boston, for my dad. But my dad is not here at the moment, so I am taking care of him.

Boston has been from home to home, but we plan on keeping him. Well, he has White Line Disease and I have to doctor him, but he is touchy about everbody. So how do I gain his trust? I plan on taking him and my horse, Charm, on a 120 mile trail ride across the Ruby Mountains in a few months after the WLD clears up. And I want him to have confidence. He is bombproof, has been everywhere and beyond! But I want him to enjoy the trails just as much as the rider. How do I gain his trust and instill confidence is this old timer?
