Is a vet check necessary?

Is a vet check/PPE necessary if you are adopting a horse from a reputable legit 501c3 rescue? They have all their horses cleared by a vet before starting any training and offering them for adoption.

My husband and I are going to drive 3 hours to this rescue that has about 80 horses available for adoption. They have quite a few that seem like they would be a good fit for me.

WDYT? Is a vet check necessary? Am I an idiot for even thinking it might not be necessary?

Edit: I just mapquested them and they are 4 hours away, not 3.

Depending on the rescue, I don't know that I would bother. Rescues are usually very upfront about their horses. They want them to go to great homes. I would ask for the vets phone number and give them a ring. I would let them know that you are looking to adopt from this rescue and you need to know about a particular horse. They should be able to tell you about any issues the horse has had.

Adopting is a great way to find a good horse.

I have no problem getting a horse from any reputable place without a vet check. We bought all our mares from a long established breeder without a vet check. They've been in the horse business 40+ years and wouldn't risk their reputation in the area by selling horses with problems.

If it is a reputable rescue, I wouldn't bother. However, a call to the vet probably won't do any good with privacy issues. Doubt they can tell you much without a written release from the rescue.

I'm with other folks. If it's a reputable rescue they do vet checks (pretty extensively), and they are usually honest upfront (even on website) about possible issues and limitations if any.

I will say that a vet check is never a waste of money. If nothing else it gives you a base line to help you determine if there are any changes the first time you have an issue with a horse.

I personally think a PPE is well worth the money spent. It is better to spend a few hundred dollars on a vet and know what you are getting than have saved that money and later find out the horse will be on your feed bill for 10 years and not able to do what you wanted.

And yes, I know a horse can get hurt at any time.
