I actually have never had the screaming except when I tried the separate them by a fence but don't let them touch method. Momma screamed all week and ran every last bit of weight off and looked like an Auschwitz survivor. I have gone as far as sending mom out to a boarding stable for 1 month, she dries up and it's all over. No fuss, no muss, but I ALWAYS do it by the moon. I do put a kindly uncle or auntie or other babies in with the foal. I also do all the foals on the place at the same time whether it's 1 or 5, works the same.

I have heard of a few ways. The first is going cold turkey, separate mother and foal by a distance and weather the storm. The mare will usually be more upset then the baby. Have the baby with another foal or old mellow gelding. They don't need to nurse but they still need to learn horse manners. Watch the foal for signs of colic and stress as they realize that mommas not there.

The second way I have heard of and seems to reduce stress for mares and foals is to gradually wean. You need a group of foals. Say six mare and foal pairs. Each day you remove one or two mares, until you eventually just have the foals and the mares out together. There seems to be less stress on the foals half. The mares will still call the babies but the foal has a whole bunch of other mares and friends to fuss with so they don't notice as much.

Good Luck weaning is a stressful time for everyone and usually the owner more then the horses.
