I was looking at buying a new horse and I was particularly interested in a TB gelding that when I recieved confo pics was going to post a critique thread for. Well yesterday just before work I got a call from my mom who went and got 2 free horses.
They are a mom and daughter pair who havent been seperated. They are also very unhandled. The mom is a 7 yr old gray QH mare who tried striking and pinning my mom against a fence when she tried picking up her feet, she is also about 200 lbs underweight. The daughter is a 2 yr old gray QH/Arab cross who is also unhandled and underweight...she also has a prominent wormy belly.
I don't know what to do. I went over after work to seperate them from my horses as my mom had put them in the shed where Colly foaled (which cut her, Sterling, and the other two off from water and shelter). I don't even know if they are current on shots, farrier or if my mom got a BOS. What should I do?
Worm, feed be in charge so they don't get aggressive.. They most likely have ulcers also. Give regular shots. I wouldn't seperate them from each other until they settle in so not too stress them.
I did worm them last night when I went and saw them and I gave them a bale and a half of hay. I don't plan on seperating them until they get in better health and more handling. I wish my mom hadn't just dumped these horses on me without consulting me first though. Especially since I had only worked in the cost of one horse into my budget (and a horse in good condition at that)
what do you mean dumped them on you? These are her horses and she should be paying for care. If your mother does things like this you need to laern to stand up to her firmly and not let her walk on you.
If your mom got them, why did she assume that you would care for them? Is she paying their costs? If not, seems like she needs to make appropriate arrangements (including a vet and trainer) or send them back. Weird situation.
I really hope your mom is taking care of the cost of the 2 new horses... That's like buying an ill-tempered dog and handing it to your friend and going "Here. Fix this... While you're at it, pay for it." I think your mom had good intentions, no doubt, but here are 2 new horses you need to work with.
Lol
This is the first time she has ever done this and by she dumped them on me was she pretty much called and said "hey I got you two new horses to have and train!"... no warning, no "would you be interested in training two unhandled horses?", no nothing. And no she doesn't expect to pay for them since my sister has a hard enough time trying to get my mom to buy her horse grain so normally that falls to me as well. So now I have to get 5 horses vaccinated wormed and Coggins this year when I had only planned on 3. I also think the mother is not a QH she isnt built like the QHs around here.
On the plus side I did get to handle both mare and filly today before I went to work. Mare was easy to groom and lead though when I went to pick up her feet she did try to pull her foot forward, almost like trying to paw while holding her foot, but after a few minutes she stopped and stood quietly. The filly had obvious seperation anxiety when I took her out to be groomed and saw how she led....which was not very good. After the second time of running me over she had a CTJ moment and after a while she stopped prancing/calling out and stood quietly while I groomed her.
Could work on em long enough to re-home or sell for a profit...although I know in some places horses w/o papers are worth next to nothing. Good luck getting them acclimated. You should post pics.
The filly looks better built than the mare. I agree she doesnt look too QH but someone more experienced would be able to say better. But she may look a little different w/ some weight.
man, oh man. I'd be livid if anyone did that to me. Mom or friend or anyone. Dumping two neglected horses on top of my healthy ones and then expecting me to feed, vet, train, and care for them? Make ME responsible for both of their lives from now on to the end of time? You seriously need to have a CTJ with your mom.
You have them now, so maybe it'll be a good experience. Maybe the mare will turn out to be a really nice horse. Feed 'em up, get basic handling on the filly, and sell her to a 4-H'er that wants a project horse. What a hot mess.
