it depends on my mood and the mood of the person asking the question...
if they are snobby and talk down to me, i will say equestrian just to use the big word :p
when its just some folks and friends who are curious i just say i ride horses and list the other sports i play... no one really comments further on the horse comment enless the goal was to argue equestrians/horseback riding is not a sport...

I also just say I ride, especially if it's someone non-horsey. I'll occasionally say that I'm a professional sh*t shoveler

Usually if they ask what sport I do I just tell them that I ride horses. This is how a conversation usually goes:

Me: "I ride horses."
Person: "Oh, do you race them?" or "Do you go in lots of races?"
Me: "Um... No. I do Dressage."
Person: "What's that? Is that the one with the hurdles?"
Me: "No, that's Jumping." And then I try to briefly summarize what we do.

Look at my ID
HagonNag and Skyseternalangel like this.

I'm not arguing with you, I'm just explaining why I'm right.

I ride horses or I ride horseback or I do horses (that one gets a few eyebrows)

Actually non-horsey people quite often ask me if I drive mine (not sure why it comes to their mind). I usually just politely explain that I have no knowledge or space for it.

People look at me and assume 'cause I'm old and fluffy that sports and I are strangers. So they rarely ask. When they do, I just say "I ride." I absolutely love the look on their faces!!!! LOLOL

I'm not a complete idiot--there are parts missing!

I say "I ride horses" Or, "I jump horses". Younger kids are mystified and ask "You jump over horses? Is it fun?" Umm... So, I now pretty much just stick to "I ride horses."

"I rodeo for a living."
Nothing fits me more than that simple sentence.

Me: "I ride horses."
Them: "Oh do you race them?"
Me: "No."
Them: "Do you jump them?"
Me: "I do western pleasure."
Them: "What is that? That sounds sexual.."

Western pleasure has to be the absolute worst to explain to people who have no idea what horse events are, so I try to avoid saying it if at all possible. If they get over laughing at the name, trying to explain how difficult "going as slow as possible" is gets them completely lost. x.x
