    What is the purpose of selling with out papers??

    Something sounds fishy to me.
    here is the add...


    15 Year old Gelding For Sale! He is broke but hasnt been rode in 5 years. He's been around Cattle and also used for Barrels... He is a registerd Quarter Horse, but will be selling without papers... His bloodlines go back to 3 Bars...

    I am going to email this person to ask but I wonder why they woulld do this??

    Could be they bought him and were told he was registered but not given the papers. Could also be a scam as above.

    There could be a transfer that is incomplete, the X is holding the papers for ransom, there is something fishy, papers are lost, horse is stolen, they're too cheap to pay for the transfer.... Could be a number of things.

    In some states, I believe it's illegal to withhold papers. Some people don't give away papers so the horse can't be shown in breed shows, or even to sell a horse that doesn't meet their breeding program standards without attaching their mare/stud's name to him. If your stallion produces a fugly colt, it could damage the stud's reputation.

    ...or they never got the papers or it doesn't have papers. In any case, always a hassle to get the papers if you even can.

    Thats what I am thinking I mean they are asking pennys for him so its not like they are trying to make $$. But to say he is reg but not give papers is he stolen? I mean why not just say I have a grade horse for sale blablabla $300.00

    he is a gelded so no babies to worry about

    I think equiniphile meant that the gelding's sire owner (or anyone who was selling without papers) might have withheld papers in order to not have to attach their stud's name to the foal.
