My TWH mare is registered by former owner, however Id rather flush money in the toilette than give it to TWHBEA, so id wouldnt be selling her with papers. If I had to guess the horse was registered changed hands a couple times but owners never transfered the papers. So basically it might as well not be registered.

Sounds like they might think that for such a low price no one deserves to be able to enter him in breed classes - but if that was the case then why even mention papers or why not say 'extra cost if sold with papers'
I think I'd be inclined to walk away from this one in case there are any ownership arguments going on

From seller "I'm selling without papers because after I moved I lost them... "

It's not that hard to replace a lost set o papers if you know his # and you are the owner of record. It can get $$ depending upon the association. More to the story....

I would guess if they are selling him that cheap, they don't want to go through the hassle and expense of getting the papers replaced. And the reason they are selling him as registered, but without papers, is simply to drum up more interest. A lot of people won't look twice at something that is grade. Being that he is a gelding, unless you are going to try to show in breed shows, the papers are really not important anyway. Just knowing his registered name will allow you to check his lineage for any health concerns, etc.

I don't find it fishy at all.

If it's a gelding and you're not showing in breed shows, why would you care about the papers?

He didn't call it grade because it's not grade, it's a registered QH, he just doesn't have the papers. If he was an inexpensive purchase for the current owner, he may never have paid to transfer the papers.

FWIW, I own two registered QHs, and I don't have the papers for either. There were both free to me, and the previous owners have the papers. If I ever *wanted* the papers, I could call them and get the previous owners to go through their file cabinets, but I truly lack the motivation to do so. They're never going to show in an AQHA show, and nothing else I do with them will require papers.

If the advertised horse is of the nice all around local/pleasure/trail horse like my two guys (one is cow horse bred, been on cows and been roped off of, but casually - no show record and no big money won.)I suspect no one cared enought to keep track.
