What would you say is better in a show?

Winning 1st on an Arab in the Arab Hunter Pleasure 13 and Under class where there are only 4 people in the class....or.....

Winning 2nd on an Arab in the Open Hunter Pleasure 11 and Under in a class of 18 riders?

As long as you're satisfied with your horse's performance, what does it matter?

This is what happens when you have democrats in office

I agree with the above,
but also how good were the other riders? You could have beat 3 amazing riders and got first, or got second and beat 16/17not very good riders and horses.
I think it will always depend on that, but really as long as you're happy with your performance that's all that matters. (:

Getting any ribbon in a class where so many others won't place is always a grand feeling. Getting a shiny blue prize to pin to your tack room is also fantastic. If your horse was great and you still don't place, that should make you happy too. Just blame politics and go on to the next show.

Not sure how points work in that organization, but typically the more people you beat the more points you get. So strictly speaking in terms of points being earned, the second place win would be better.

But like the others said, it's all about how satisfied you are with the ride.

Im not competitive, I like showing for the fun of it (just spending time with my pony!), so even if I place I think its a job well done. lol. I think if you place higher with more people (if they're good competition) then that should be better.

I should have explained the reason for asking. Our barn has a policy that if two kids are riding the same horse in a show and would be in the same Championship Classes, the one who does "better" in their class gets first choice of what Championship they enter.

To me it seems like a bad way to do it because the word "better" is subjective when you are not comparing similar classes, with similar number of riders.

I completely agree with you as far as it shouldn't matter as far as how you feel. And it doesn't. It was a policy question, which I should have explained before hand.

How would I figure out the points?

I'd have the kids toss a coin in this case. 1st out of 4 is 'technically better' than 2 or 3 out of 18 but it's all so subjective about the quality of riders and horses that I wouldn't feel fair making the choice. A coin toss or best out of 3 coin toss would settle it fairly.

the point system is based on the # of horses in class. example: a 3 point system you would get 1 point for every 3 horses in class. the points are distributed down amoung the placings. So in those classes you described, being 1st /4 would earn you just one point. The 2nd/18 is a 6 point class so 1st would earn 6 points,2nd /5 points,3rd/ 4 points,4th/3 points......

I can understand the barn's policy, it would be really complicated if they based off lots of different factors. Making it just about the ribbon is much easier.
