For western novels, pretty much anything written by Louis L'Amour. The Sackett novels are good, the series starts with "The Daybreakers" but my favorite of that series is probably "To the far blue mountains".

I grew up reading every Louis L'Amour book I could get my hands on. I may have to go back and read them again when I have time.

The Valdez Horses by Lee Hoffman and although they aren't really "westerns"... My friend Flicka, Thunderhead, and Green Grass of Wyoming....

I saw the movie Flicka. That had the little girl with the wild mustang, right?

^Yup.

Not really sure if this fits the criteria but I strongly suggest The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater. Amazing book I think I may re-read it.

ANYTHING by Ralph Cotton. He is a lesser-known older western writer, but "Hangman's Choice" is in my top 5 fav books of all time in any genre. I couldn't put it down!! Jurisdiction is also super good. And Black Mesa is probably the third. All by him. I just can't get enough. Sadly, some of his older works, like the ones listed, are out of print. Maybe the library will have them, if not Amazon is always a safe bet. Seriously, tho, read Hangman's Choice.
