All the work is well worth seeing them first thing in the morning.

I much prefer having them at home. I've never boarded at a stable (there is only one that I know of in my area that actually has a barn that boards horses & it's not the greatest place...) The other boarding facilites are huge fields that you pay to keep your horse in with god knows what else. I don't think the horses are seperated in any way; just a couple dozen all mingling out together.

I have, however had to go through times where my horses were kept at a friend's or family member's place & it sucked!!
I hated not being in control of where my horse was put or who they were put out with. They were also fed whatever the other person's horse was fed unless I wanted to drive out there every day (and that's hard when you are in school). It was also difficult to get out & ride & I always feel awkward wandering around someone else's property lol.

This was the case all through school for me. I did have my girls at my aunt's farm for a year which was nice because I spent every weekend there in highschool. But then they moved 3 hours away to a bigger place & because we still didn't have fences up my horses had to go with them!
It was pretty much like having no horses at all at that point.

When I graduated, my gift was a fenced pasture lol & so i've had my horses at home for several years now which is nice. Occasionally i'll keep one over at my friend's just for convenience but I always have one at home to ride :)

I voted Home.

1) I know what, when and how much I feed them and that BOTH of them eat full amount.

2) I can visit them whenever I want, several times a day, on my convenience.

3) If I have to do any medical procedures (wrapping the hoof, compress, etc.) I can do it when needed.

4) Fly masks and blankets go on/off when needed, same stands for going to stalls.

Lots of work, because I have to do everything myself.

I see some benefits to keeping your horse at your own place, but boarding for me FAR outweighs any of those. I board at a wonderful barn, and I work cleaning stalls at a couple other very good places!
I like boarding for 1) I Hate living in the country!!! (It's a nice place to visit, but Give me the city any day!)
2) I can go away on a vacation and not have to worry about who's going to come take care of my animals. I know my horse will always be taken care of by people I know and trust and who know my horse,.. probably better than I do.
3) I have an indoor arena at a boarding facility (most private homes/properties around here do not,) and this is not a place you don't want to have one.
4) companionship. For me AND my horse! - I have other people to ride with. My horse has other horses without me having to own more than one.
To name a few.

ETA: kitten Val, I can get All of your "pros" at my boarding facility.

I currently board Bourbon but I have had horses at home in the past. I MUCH prefer having them at home.

At home I can see them whenever I want and I don't have to travel. I can know exactly what my horse is eating and when and I have complete control over every aspect of his care.

Hopefully within the next few years my husband and I will be able to sell our current place and move somewhere with land so that we can have Bourbon at home instead of boarding him.

I board and I prefer it (not that it is an option to have him at home, but pretending that it is).

My horse is boarded with my trainer. I trust her completely and utterly.

I don't have to wake up early every day

I can take as much time off as I want if I am sick

If something comes up, I don't have to worry

I don't have to schedule my life around my horse, if I want to go to a wedding that is an all day and evening event, I can

I can take a vacation

If there is horrid weather, I can stay home.

I can't think of any cons to my situation, it is ideal.

^^ I agree completely. If you have the right barn, it's a wonderful thing!
I trust my barn owners completely and they will bend over backwards for any of the horses or their owners. Most of the things people say in their "pros for keeping them at home" I get anyway at the barn where I board. (all except for the non-travel part)

I did self-board a two-minute walk from where I lived, I was the only boarder, and the owners weren't really 'horse-people', they were just randoms that let us use the old stable and riding rings etc they happened to have, in exchange for cleaning it up. It was pretty nice because it was pretty much like it WAS at home, just not attached to my house, haha.

I have mine at home and I would rather board.

All th pros that AlexS and Reiterin have said.

I love having mine at home but it's a lot of work and the cold of canada doesn't help :)

I would also like to have people to ride with and to have an arena.

The barn I used to board Abby at when we first got her, also where I have and still have riding lessons at is wonderful! Love the BO! She takes great care of all of the horses!

That must have been amazing! Do you still board there?
