My first horse was named Shiloh by his previous owner. I changed it to Wildfire. He was abused before I got him so I thought he deserved a fresh start, beginning with a new name. My newest horse apparently started out as Trooper then his last owner changed it to Snap. Every time I would say it I would do the rice krispies commercial in my head "snap, crackle, pop!". I changed it to Luka lol.

My horses original name was Hummer, but that sounded weird so we changed it to Merlin.

An animal communicator told me that horses don't refer to other horses they are with by name. They respond to their own name because of the attention that usually follows but the AC said they don't get the concept of names. Believe it or not, who knows?

Actually I do believe that. I can (and often do) stand out in the pasture and scream "Hey stupids, who wants dinner?" and every last horse comes a runnin'. Doesn't matter if you call their names, call 'em all dumba$$ or whatever, every last one comes running to get dinner even if I call them all a few hours early.

It depends on the horse. My mare was MAD when I tried to change her name. Her name is Negra and I get a lot of nasty looks and some people think its dumb. I tried to change it and every time I tried a name for a week she would not look at me, just turn her butt and ignore me. But if I used 'Negra' she was back to her normal sassy self lol. I gave up and I think it fits her really.

I can only guess how he got the name Hummer.

I sold a horse to a family for the daughter to show. The dad renamed id "Harley." Why Harley? The dad said his next purchase was supposed to be a Harley motorcycle until the women in the family ganged up on him and "bought this stupid horse!" He really wasn't angry, but the name stuck.

Am I the only person whose horse doesn't know their name?

Hey, maybe she does and I just haven't noticed. But her name doesn't seem to "grab her attention" or anything.

However, I do call her a million different names so that is probably why.

"Sunny" is usually Goober or Sunshine.

To go with the thread, I semi-changed her name when I bought her as a yearling.

She was Sunkist, but it was such a girly name and she is much more a tomboy. I didn't want to completely change it because I had been talking to the owner forever before I bought her so I had gotten in the habit of saying Sunkist, so I wanted an easy transition.

I have only ever changed the name of one horse, my current one Jackson, the name he came with was so stupid as to defy belief. He is a paint and the movie Hidalgo had been a big hit about the time he was born. Now had they named him Hidalgo, I would have probably hated it but he would have more than likely kept it. But no, they called him Dolgo, because they thought it was hilarious to stand out in the pasture and yell "HEYYYYY Dolgo!"
