I love the Valley of the Horses by Jean Auel. It is the 2nd book of the Earths Children series, all of which are excellent reads IMO

My all time favorite is Blind Beauty by K M Peyton. Its about a girl who's mother has married an evil man Maurice who races steeple chasers and she goes to work at a poor stable and finds the love of her life; a horse named Buffoon. A GREAT read.
