Your Favorite Legend

Who is your favorite horse legend? Why?

Mine is Display. Not a whole lot of people know about Display, but he was a racehorse who was born in 1923. I first read about him in an old horse book when I was a kid, and never heard of him again until recently when I found him in my mare's background.

Anyways, the book described him as one of the most dangerous racehorses of all times. They needed to pad his stall and put weights and chains on his legs to weigh him down while he wasn't working. Recent research told me that he chased a Man O War colt out of the starting box and it took the handlers at least 15 minutes to load him into a gate for racing.

The book's last words on him were something to the idea of "Perhaps a soul such as his weren't meant for this world"

He was by Fair Play and was recorded to have been a better sire than he was a winner.

I remember falling in love with him when I read that, and finding him in my mare's pedigree was just a dream. Here is a pic of him:

My other favorite is Ruffian. I wish they would do a movie on her, but since she broke down on the track, I doubt she will ever get her own film.

Who is your favorite "Legend"?

You really want me to pick ONE?? Just one.. *sigh*.. Well, I'm going to add a horse to the mix that is an all time favorite of mine but he's not well known.

Teddy Terrific - "The 21-year-old Teddy Terrific has competed in speed events at the All American Quarter Horse Congress every year since 1992 and has earned 10 Congress championships and nearly 40 top-10 finishes. He has also earned two AQHA reserve world championships, more than $100,000, 10 trophy saddles and 21 trophy buckles – just to name part of his accomplishments, and he’s still running strong"

There is a movie/documentary on Ruffian. I've watched it once and cried for hours afterwards. I can't watch it again.

My favorite legend. Dash For Cash. I don't think I need to go into why...

I found it on youtube and watched it all.

I have to honestly say that I have never, NEVER cried during a movie. Not once. I'm not a sap and I realize what I see is fiction.

However, I balled when Ruffian broke down. I just couldn't help myself. I cried for the entire scene. They did a great job with that movie.

I'm such a sap I just cried over the Ruffian movie, and I didn't even see it. Just the fact that other people cried is enough to set me off! I have trouble watching horse movies because I am so empathic.

My favorite legend never really lived, but was such a hero to me. Black Beauty. That book changed my life. And makes me cry.

I have two.

The first and most important, the incomparable Secretariat. I got the chance to watch him make history all those years ago, and it's hard to explain to people who didn't live through that era how important that big red colt was to the American public. There has never been another like him.

The second is Elmer Bandit. Amazing endurance horse with a spectacular record. He and his owner racked up major miles and wins over the years. I followed his career for many years, and shed more than a few tears when he died.
