Well, I found Spice looking for a horse to lease. It certainly wasn't love at first sight, in fact, for about three months after I began leasing her I was very keen on finding something else. But I stuck with her because there wasn't anything else that could do what I wanted (show jumping). Anyway, after i'd been leasing her for about a year we had an accident with a horse that hadn't been gelded. (Our stable rescues horses, so most of the males come in ungelded, and Spice is a bit of a flirt.)
So she fell pregnant, and I said to our BO "The baby is mine." He agreed, because I said she was pregnant at the beginning of the year (it's a feeling I had) and she only foaled late November, so no one else thought she was pregnant.
By this time I wouldn't trade Spice for anything, and I got her through her pregnancy knowing that whatever the baby was, it was agreed that it was mine.
So on November 25th, 2007, I got a free horse! Southern Comfort was chestnut with one white sock and a little white star, and he's my special baby. Spice is not a cuddly horse, but Soco is so I finally got a horse I could shower with affection.
I love them both, and smile every time I even think of them. I wouldn't even have Soco if I hadn't stuck it out with Spice, so I attribute my luck to being too stubborn to quit.
I've got a few other stories about some of the other horses in my life, but Spice is my heart horse.
