    1st time ponying

This is the first time my 6yr old has ponied. She is not broke to ride and I have been working with her for about 2 months. She was a very good girl. The saddle she had on is about 20lbs heavier than her "normal" saddle.1stponyride.jpg

Carry a long whip and tap her to make her keep up and not lag behind. When she's better at this head out on the trails. The experience will be good for her. When I first ponied my arab, he was so sensitive that the float never came out of the lead rope. His head stayed about my knee no matter the speed. It felt like I was just holding a rope.

I would like to try ponying. But I do not have a horse that has been ponied or one that has ponied another horse. Not sure where to start since none of us know anything. I don't really have a saddle that has a stout horn either.

Thanks for the advice Saddlebag. I will try that today.

G8td, you don't use a horn for ponying. Work in a smaller fenced in area. It is often awkward at first as the ponied horse will sometimes try to get behind and switch sides. Rather than try to pull it back alongside, just move your horse's hips over. Practice will improve your skills.
