Advice for teaching a mini to jump in hand?

So I have a 3 year old mini, Rio. And I would really like to show him in hand next year at a couple local shows, we've done some training with him, he lunges and has shown a lot of early potential over fences. But he wont go over a fence unless the person leading him goes over with him lol. If I try to run past the jump and have him go over he just follows me around it, lol. So any advice would be great! Here are some pics of him going over some fences, the highest is let at 1.9ft (it looks huge cause he's so tiny, lol)

I would suggest holding a lunge whip in your outside hand but angled behind you so you can encourage him from behind to keep him beside you...if that made sense? If he'll lunge, maybe set up some ground poles and get him trotting over them the same as you would a full size horse. Then raise the last ground pole into a cross rail and so on. Have to built him up slowly on his own so he doesn't rely on you jumping it first! He looks like a good little jumper though! Keep us updated on how things go!

I helped teach a mini to jump in hand. We had someone lead, and another person with a whip chase her over the jump. It wasn't as terrible as it might sound, she wasn't scared, but she didn't want to go over unless someone went over with her. But we got her up to like, 2.5 to 3' and we didn't want to jump it, haha. We also shortened the length of the jump, so there was only maybe four feet of pole across. It only took a few times with the whip for her to learn she was going over with leader went over or not, lol. Here's a pic you might be able to see what I mean about shortening the pole.
