Hi there! Im new to the site and Im just looking for a little help. I ride an appaloosa, hes 14, and he has arthritis in his front shoulders Im pretty sure. I was just wodering if there was an operation for this (I read that there was but I wasnt too sure) and If so has anyone had this done or knows about how much it would cost? Let me know! Thanks!
Honestly, it could be managed with some injections and joint supplements.
Adequan and something else....but anyway, one is actually supposed to rebuild the cartilage in between joints and repair damage, and then other of course prevents any future damage from happening.
Yep, supplements and injections are your best bet if it is, in fact, arthritis. Though only a vet could tell you for sure. Also, movement is a huge factor. DO NOT keep this horse stalled if you can help it. He needs room to walk around and keep those joints lubricated. Depending on the severity of the 'arthritis', mild or moderate work under saddle might actually help. Surgery, however, is not a good idea. Not only would you end up with a horse that still has arthritis but then there would also be scar tissue in the joint, making it worse.
