Hoping to get a little advise on this. I bought a new horse a few months ago and I will admit I have had very little time to work much with her.
She's very young - only 3 or so, grade quarter horse type mare. I'm pretty sure her previous owner did almost no trailering or trailer work.
When I picked her up, she was hesitant to get in the trailer but did get in fairly quickly and quietly.
I trail ride so my horses get trailered a lot. So here's the problem I'm having. She will load right in the trailer, stand for a minute or so then back slowly right back out. If you put any pressure on her then she runs out of the trailer. I don't tie my horses in the trailer (previous bad accident) plus the one time I did try to tie her did not go well but luckily no one was hurt. I can her loaded but it's usually on and off 5-6 times until she'll wait long enough for me to get the slant or door closed.
(I have a two horse slant by the way).
Of course, if there was a second person available, they can hold the door closed long enough for her to stay still and me get out but unfortunately, I rarely have a second person to help me.
I could understand if she was panicked or running back out but it's more like a game to her. I have tried putting hay in front of her but she'll just take a couple bites and back out again.
Thoughts?
