Question bad habits in the round pen...need help!

I have a 4 year old haflinger mare with terrible round pen manners! She will take of bucking. I need ideas on how to correct her and why she would be doing it.

Does it happen when you first put her in the pen? Could it be pent up energy she's releasing? Does it happen every time you let her put, for the entire time? Is she protesting being on a lunge line? Your post is a bit vague, could you elaborate just a bit?

She is doing it when I ask her canter. We have her off the lunge line most of the time.

So what? Let her buck. Why is that a problem? Let her buck but keep insisting that she move around. She has her opinion and she is saying it, but you just keep on asking what you are asking. Stay calm, don't meet her buck with anything more than calm insistance that she keep going. She will tire of bucking and will be swayed by your calm , confident aura and she will start coming to you mentally.
If she is coming AT you, and I don't mean just turning alittle toward you when she is bucking (I would pretty much just blow that off and ignore it, it's not serious threat gesture) But if she is really cutting in close to you when she goes around, leaning her shoulder in at you or multiple times passing you and kicking out at you as she passes, then you need to DRIVE her and get her to realize that you are in charge.
As soon as she surges forward, let her go, don't add energy for a bit, then try again to ask for the gait that you want. Calm Clear And Consistent.

She is not coming at me, but when I have her on the lunge she is to close and I am afraid she will hit me sooner or later. I am going out with her later so ill tell you what happens. BTW sometimes when we have her on the lunge she move out of the circle and go where she do I correct her for that?

Tinyliny- I was reading your location and we are really close. I am in friday harbor, WA

If she were mine I would drive her harder everytime she bucked...when she STOPS bucking just let her be IF she stays in the gait you want her in

Hi, Lildonkey. I ride at Bridle Trails. Come and join me some time!
So, you are working her ON the lunge line IN a round pen? I didn't realize she was on a line. Why don't you let her off the line and work her at liberty in the round pen?
Since it sounds like, what with her intentionally crowding you like that, that there are clear respect issues, I would recommend working freely in the round pen . Bag the line for the time being.

There was another thread about similar problems with a lady who had a horse named "Guiness". Can someone find that thread? Most of the advice given there would apply to you.

If you even want to come to Bellevue, I will gladly spend a couple of hours showing you how to round pen. IT's really fun. There is a good 60 footer about a half mile from my barn.

Great! When we have her on the lounge line she doesn't usally do it but she does veer off where she want to go on it sometimes
