Bareback First Ride

What do you think of breaking a horse without a saddle and indroducing the saddle later?

All horse trainers I have seen, the first ride the horse has ever had was with a saddle.

What are your thoughts?

That's how I started my appendix filly! I feel safer on a bareback pad because there is nothing to tangle in. It went great!

I think most trainers like to start with saddle because if something did happen they can shut it down faster and in doing so, showing the horse it's not OK to buck, rear or do whatever it was doing. But I know a few people who have also trained their horses bareback and have had good success with it.

I really think it depends. By the time the horse is being ridden it has already been packing around the saddle forever, doing groundwork in it, to the point where they are comfortable with it. I don't think I would start a colt bareback, you never know what could happen the first ride.

However, some people do it successfully, so who am I to say it's incorrect?

I started both my gelding and my stallion bareback and both of them went bareback for several weeks before I introduced a saddle with a rider (thouh they had already had a saddle on enough times t get comfy with the feeling).

It went great, so I think it is the owner/trainer's persoal preference.
