Barrel Racing Question

Hi everyone so my question is, I have a Quarter horse mare who just turned 4 who has been in extensive barrel training since July, she is coming along nicely and will "run" a great home. I took her to her first barrel race this past weekend (11-10-12) and she acted like she had never even seen a barrel, she has run the pattern in three different arenas at home indoor and out, but totally flipped there. I expected her to be nervous and by no means perfect, but I'd really like to know what I can practice at home to prepare her for an actual event, as we have our next race 12-1-12 and I would hate to have her act the same way again. She was great with the other horses, intercom, arena, people, gates etc she was just terrified of the actual barrels? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Green Broke
Honestlt the best way to fix that is to haul her to more places even if you just bring her to ride around. Do some time onlys and such so you aren't wasting money. The excitement and also your nerves have a big impact on younger unseasoned horses just need to get them and yourself out more often.

That's what I was thinking, I have a couple others that go, so she to will just continue to go and get better! Thanks for the help!

I agree hauling will definitely help. But an other thought...
Was it the cover on the barrels? Are your practice barrels all the same colours, maybe it was the colour and covers of the barrel that is the problem. The reason I say this is because my friends horse who has been hauled for years now doesn't like white and red barrels?
If this might be what it is maybe try wrapping your practice barrels in different colours with a sheet or something and see how she reacts.
Best of luck!

She just needs hauling time and experience. The environment at home is safe; The world is not. She'll get more comfortable with time.
