Bit or No Bit?

Just curious;

My 11 year old gelding (who I've had for a while) was once ridden bitless, but has flopped back and forth for most of his life. I've never ridden bitless, so I was just curious what the benefits and drawbacks would be?

I also find that when I ride him in any bit (I normally school him in an eggbutt snaffle as he has a decently soft mouth, and gives to the bit pretty well), he sticks his tounge out the side of his mouth. I've tried putting a flash on him, but he always manages to wiggle it out the corner of his mouth - and I think they've always looked a little mean. Could that be because he prefers bitless, or just a quirk? I've had mixed responses.

It could be that your horse doesn't have much space between his bit and palate and the bit you're using is too thick for him. Have you tried using a thinner bit?

Yep, I've run through most of the milder bit sizes; (even tried a few pony bits), but he does it with all of them :S

Needless to say, I've got quite the collection of bits now thanks to him :p

A pony bit would probably be too narrow for his mouth....

Use whatever works on him without having to clamp his mouth shut. Respect his preferences.

Well he does seem to work better with the eggbutt snaffle I have him in, he certainly frames up better, and responds better to my aids. That's what I've been riding him in. He still lolls his tounge out of his mouth like a dope though.

I'm just curious about the bitless bridles, I've never used one. So I'm just wondering what the benefits and drawbacks of using one would be.

Annnnd just for the record - the pony bits were shots in the dark lol, I've seen stranger things in the horse world.
