1. Do you have to use the traditional clicker-button thing, or are there alternatives? Nope, you can use any distinct sound, the clicker has proven to be the most effective form of this, but not the only one. I often use just a smooch sound I make myself.
2. I heard something about +R and -R clicker training. What is that? This is kind of complicated I'll post a link at the bottom of this that has more detailed information. But essentially it's the forms of learning. +Reinforcement is a way of saying "positive reinforcement" - not positive like good or bad, but positive like addition and subtraction. +R is the addition of something good to reward the correct behavior. -R is the removal of something unwanted to reward the correct behavior. +Punishment is the addition of something unwanted to discourage the wrong behavior. -Punishment is the removal of something desired to discourage bad behavior.
3. How should I go about learning clicker training? More specifically, what website/book/DVD do you recommend to learn from? There are so many great resources on the internet. JillyBean wrote a fantastic thread teaching all the science and psychology behind clicker training, how and why it works. Clicker Training: Challenge Accepted but there's also a trainer (who frequents this forum too!) with a very educating website, Shawna Karrasch - Video 1
I did a search on previous threads, but in my quick scanning I didn't see these specific questions addressed before. Thanks in advance to any answers!
Welcome to the wonderful world of Clicker Training! Done right it can open so many doors in your horses' training. :) It's fun too!
