I am talking about all around trail horse. They have to be able to do all the foundation things such as neck rein, side pass, back up, smooth transition through their gaits, ground tie, park out, and stand still for getting on and off. They also have to be able to load in the trailer by verbal command and back out of the trailer on verbal command.
There is several other things that they have to be able to do, but these are the main things.
Now, my filly is out of my own mare and I was there when she was born and started the imprinting process at birth. She has wonderful ground manners, already parks out, loads, clips and baths without any issues. She has already had sixty days under saddle has been ridden on several trail rides. She is already stands still for mounting and backs up with ease upon verbal command from the ground and on her back. I have shot cap guns off of her pulled tarps around on her and dragged a bucket. She has accepted everything so far with ease. I am now focused on developing her flat walk and running walk and building her muscles. I will also start working on her side passing and being able to open gates and closing them while riding her. Is there anything else that you can think of that I should be working with her on?
Now, my husband got his blue roan yesterday. He is supposed to have 60 days under saddle on him. He stands still to mount. He does not back out of the trailer yet.. He has a very nice running walk. He has a wonderful headset, and carries himself very nicely. He needs some work on leading; he wants to walk in front of you. That’s all we know about him so far. He is very pretty even now. He has the black points with a thick, black mane and tail. His head is black and even now with his winter coat you can see a lot of the blue shinning through when you brush him. My husband is a little disappointed because he is not as far along as my filly. I think it's too soon to tell. The horse hasn't adjusted to his new home yet. He seemed pretty nervous both the horse and my husband. I think he knows he is going to have his worked cut out to beat my horse. LOL
My filly is chestnut with a very long flaxen mane and tail. She has one white sock and a white blaze on her face. I don't think she is as pretty as he is but I am hoping she will stand out because of her gait and headset. As soon as the weather breaks were I can clean her up for some decent pictures, I will post them. I am also hoping to get some videos of our training progress.
I wanted to ride her today but the weather would not cooperate. It is snowing, muddy and cold.
So I decided to write about them instead. I thought I would keep a journal of our progress on how they are doing this year. Please if anyone has any suggestions how to make my horse stand out in her training to out do my husbands, I would appreciate any info.
I really would like to have mine turn out better than his. We will be going to a trail riding competition in October and I am wanting to have her ready by then.
