I just bought a hot, 4 year old unraced thoroughbred mare named Grace about 5 months ago. I really think this horse is a ticking time bomb waiting to happen. I like Grace alot, but she is very unpredictable and dangerous. Some days she seems very sweet and lovey-dovey, but other days I swear she tries to kill me.
When I go to the paddock to take her out, she'll come walk up to me and greet me. (Or sometimes she just stands and looks at me) Today I walked up to her and just started petting her shoulder, and all of a sudden out of nowhere, she turns her head with her teeth bared and chomps down on my leg, leaving a huge bruise! I smacked her on the neck and she turned and bucked right in my face, thank god she missed. Then she trotted away before I could do anything. This isn't the first time she has hurt me. She has randomly bitten my on my arm a couple months ago too, leaving another bruise.
Another time, I was sitting on a giant bale of hale in the pasture while Grace stood next to me, eating the hay. We were sitting there for like 5 minutes and then she leaned over me and sniffed my pockets for treats. (I didnt have any) Then all of a sudden she kicks out with her front leg, then rears up right over top of me! I have to jump out of the way so she doesn't land on top of me. Then she ran off, so I took her out and made her work. Another time I went into the pasture and walked up to her and she pinned her ears and kicked me in the leg.
She has also started crow hopping. Its gotten worse with time and has become really annoying. At first I thought it was because she was in heat and her ovaries were hurting when I rode her, but I dont think thats the case because she's been doing it for over a month now. I ride her in a grass field and whenever we ride down or up a tiny slope she tosses her head and looks like she is going to crow hop. Then when I ask her to canter, she throws her head and crow hops continueously like every three strides, (no matter if we are on a slope or not) and it makes me wonder is she in pain or is an attitude problem? She doesn't ride through it when I make push her forward and make her keep going.
I don't know what to do. Maybe its a mixure of attitude and physical problems? If this was your horse would you sell her? I'm getting tired of being bitten and kicked at by my own horse. My other thoroughbred, Trigger,(who came from a bad place) is spoiled with so many cookies and love and I can tell he is soo greatful for it. Sometimes I think it would be best if I sold her and got a thoroughbred that was actually greatful for all the attention that I give them. But I don't know if I could let go of Grace, and if I did sell her where would she end up?:-( I dont know what to do, or if she can even be fixed.
