The day started out a little frustrating as Diablo didn't want to be caught. Eventually, I had to catch my horse and pull her out, THEN he was willing to let me at least aproach him. I got the halter on him and he came out just fine, so I put caddy back out in the pasture. As I start to work with Diablo just standing and behaving, she zooms by the other end of the barn and spooks him...I calm him down and manage to put Caddy up in a stall so she doesn't spook him again, and he calms down again.
I manage to get him brushed, combed, and flysprayed then work him out a bit. (I'd do something ten just let him stand around and get love and treats, then work on it again) I then decide to cut him a bridal path. The sissors of course....were going to eat him, but he seemed to have more trust in me today, and it only took a little while to let me up behind his ears. But to do this, I had to make the halter a little bigger so I could just put it back further on his head....My dumb rearend forgot to tighten it back..
Here's where I make my first mistake of the day....I decide to put him in the cross ties, just for a few minutes to let him get used to it. Well, he spooks...because that's what he does best, and he pulls back, pulling one of the eye-hooks out of the wood as well as slipping right out of the halter I forgot to size back down >_< Now he's loose without a halter, in an area that he 'could' get out of....Great...Luckily the barn was open and he just went in there instead of the other dirrection...so I just closed the barn and got the halter back on him and screwed the eye-hook back into the post. I made him walk back up to the area and just stand there, me holding him, then put the cross ties back on, stood there for like, two seconds to show him that the ties won't eat him and that he won't 'have' to 'get away' from them, then take him and lunge him a bit. I give him another break in the shade, then lunge again...less than 5 minutes and go to put him back in the cross ties to show him once again....Also, durring his break, I worked Caddy and left her out in the pasture this time since she had been good....But what does she do? Gallop up alongside the fenceline where Diablo is hooked to the cross ties...Now, I know I say he spooks alot, because he does, but he's NEVER reared or totally lost it untill that happened. He reared up, struck out, and flailed! I couldn't believe it! I was SO mad at my own horse for being the cause because he was doing SO good!!! But, he pulls the eye-hook out AGAIN and this time it stays on him and flails around him and he's still freaking out and I'm trying to stay calm and help him calm down as well. Eventually he stood there, snorting, and pulling on the cross tie that's still attached. I release him and make him just stand there a moment while I screw in the eye-hook AGAIN (will now be making a new hole for it...ug) and he stands there all snorting and wide eyed, but stands none' the less. Caddy had done her damage and had since trotted away to graze -_- silly mare...
During this last spook he also managed to injure his face...so not only did I have to make him stand there I also had to doctor him up x.x Oddly enough, he stood well for the cleaning and spray antiseptic and coat of swat.
Now this is what worries me the most. Yesterday when I had finished working him he followed me around a little while, but today, as soon as he knew the clip was off, he threw his head and tried to run away...didn't get far because the halter wasn't even off. So I get it over one ear, same thing....I make him calm down and wait, then get it all the way off, and he was NOT interested in hanging around this time....
I feel HORRIBLE that this happened and know that now, whenever I work with him, no matter what, My horse is going in a stall >_<
I'm afraid that he'll be even harder to catch next time now too...-sighs-
