Dog train my horse, or horse train my dog?

OK, so Jacoby moves back to my parents house this weekend. Over the winter we got a great dog that enjoys being off leash at my parents. A large wooded area with old logging roads great for trail rides. Jackson (the dog) didn't seem to care about the horses but he did want to 'play' with the new donkeys. That has all been settled now. When we take my brothers mare for a walk she rears sometimes when my mom's new puppy runs around her.

So long story short, what is the best way to introduce my gelding to the dogs, and be able to ride together? I would hate to have to lock up the dog when he loves going for walks so much.

If it was me. I'd put the dog on a leash and the horse haltered and on a lead rope. Introduce them to each other the same way you'd introduce two horses. I"ve personally never had any problem with dogs(mine or someone else's) going riding with me and my horse. Just be sure if the dogs is a heeler breed that he doesn't always trot/follow right next to the back of the horse. My heeler, border collie,germanshepard cross does this, and it scares some of my green horses,because they can't see him,but sense he is close. Hope this helped some

I took my dog & scruffed him by the neck, laid him on the ground and let the horse come to him. That is my way of telling hin the horse is mine & she is dominate over him. He was a city dog for the 1st 3yrs of his life, had never been around any other animals except other dogs, but has accepted cats sharing his dog house & horses sharing his yard. He is a huge 100 lb mutt but is a great dog

Thanks for the ideas. The laying down idea is how we trained him to stop chasing the donkeys. He doesn't heel, but he does run pretty fast and jacoby is so green! I think for the first few rides I will make my boys go with me just in case.
