Draw reins are an effective training tool, but I can't say I use them often. I do own a pair, but I've seen people use them so much that they became reliant on them to get the desired result from their horse. I used them when I first started my horse. I hooked them to her bridle and ran them underneath and overtop of my saddle horn. I hooked her to a lunge line and let her figure out giving to the pressure. Two lessons of that and I could see-saw on the reins and she'd bend at the poll. I used them from time to time her first year under saddle. I find it very difficult to turn a horse with them. That's just my opinion. Not sure why in the world someone would use them in barrel racing. ??

Yah I didn't understand that because if draw reins are used with head carriage why would you use them barrel racing when the horse needs his head for turning. It seemed like the horse had a harder time with the draw reins then the other horses that either had tie downs or nothing at all.

It wasn't a martingale or a tie down was it? I'm seriously confused as to why someone would want to use draw reins in this instance.

The only reason I could see is that maybe he is a freight train to stop. Yank up on those draw reins and the horse would probably fold in half to stop. Im thinking it must have been a martingale because in order to let the horse actually run, those draw reins must have been so long that the horse would have tripped on them.

Maybe they were a German Martingale? I know a few barrel racers who use those and you can make them with barrel reins...That might of looked like draw reins?
