I have a few questions.
The first one is about being on the forehand. Sammy is always on the forehand. I just can't seem to get him to use himself properly. What exactly can I do to encourage him to use himself properly? I also know rider error can contribute to this. What sort of things could I be doing to encourage him to be on the forehand? What are some things I can work on to discourage this? I do try to get him doing a lot of transitions (just started including cantering into this today) and circles and figure eights etc.
I also noticed he drops his shoulder and cuts into circles especially when he is going faster. As I said above what sort of riding can encourage these habits and what helps to discourage it? When we are walking I can make sure he doesn't do it but as we go up in the gaits he does it a lot more. I keep my inside leg on him which helps a bit. I also read or heard somewhere about lifting your inside hand a bit, I can't remember the deatails exactly but I have been trying that and it also helps a bit.
I try really hard to ride the best I can and keep my position as good as possible. I try not to blame sammy but he really can be hard to ride, most people hate riding him. Anyway I did already know these habits existed but today when I cantered him a bit they really stood out.
He was at his worst when I was cantering and trying to get him to do a circle. He was very heavily on his forehand and kept cutting into the circle so it was extrememly tight. This and him constantly fighting with me and changing direction on the forehand was throwing me off balance and a couple of times I only just managed to stay on. He is also worse when working on his left side. Everyone just says says well he is an ex barrel racer. I don't think this should be an excuse but with these habits I'm not suprised he didn't make it as a barrel racer.
So if that made sense to anyone I would love some tips. Thanks!
