How do you train a horse to get used to an electric fence?

OK... I'm gonna do my best to not sound like a redneck...so lets not beat me up for what I'm about to write..... When we installed a smaller pen ( about an acre) we used elec fencing. We simply put the horses in their new pen and let them figure it out themselves. I swear... it will only take a couple times of getting zapped and they will not do it any more... I was a mess about it, scared they would hate me for sure... but we let the kids get zapped and the dog got it on his tail and even the cat with her tail....its not so bad really... :D BTW.. my lover boy twister isn't the sharpedt tool in the shed and he got it within a couple hours.

There are different types of chargers. I prefer the kind that starts off with a low zap and then increases in intensity the longer contact is made. I don't like the really hot ones used for cattle.

horses will all figure it out for themselves. some will just seem to sense the electricity and stay away. others will need to touch it a time or two at the most before they get the picture. its no big deal really. ive been zapped by fences a thousand times or more and ive been fine. at a horses size you have nothing to worry about. it gives them a fright more than anything :)

I thought of all of you yesterday....WHEN I GOT ZAPPED!!!!

The best part is that the horses are mot even in the electric pen... I was cleaning the feed bunk and water bucket and didn't realize that the fence was still plugged in!!!
